Assessing Blackout Risk With High Penetration of Variable Renewable Energies

We propose a method to analyze the risk of blackouts with high penetration variable renewable energy sources (VRESs). consider model for long-term evolution power grid including propagation cascading failures, day-to-day fluctuations generation and moderate use storage. resilience stress as VRESs are progressively incorporated. also evaluate VRES performance average fraction daily demand covered by renewables.We find that in general, intrinsic variability increases blackout risk. However, if implemented distributed way, spatial spreading may have positive effect on resilience. As case study, we replacement conventional plants solar photovoltaic combined storage Balearic Islands. source redundancy briefly discuss potential wind energy.
